Today, I had the pleasure of writing a loved one to uplift him about the future. His future, and that of his family, especially his three-year old daughter. He is contemplating his future and concerned whether his past mistakes will dictate his future and his ability to provide for her future as well. At first I thought I should revisit all of our past conversations to remind him of his options and that there is eventually light at the end of the tunnel. But then, something inside said “What would Jesus have you do?”… I had a real “WWJD” aha moment. And I decided to do the best thing, which should have been my first thought – encourage him in the Word.
The bible teaches us that God will never leave us or forsake us … Even in times of uncertainty, disappointment or despair.
Deuteronomy 31: “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Ultimately, we are all have to face life’s challenges whether we want to or not, life doesn’t care if we are ready or not. There’s an old adage, that says something like … “It’s not about where you start; but where you finish“. We all have choices – each day, we have free will to decide to go left or right, do good or bad, repent or not repent. Each day we must live with the consequences of our actions, words and deeds. None of us are exempt! Not one of our sins is any greater or less than anyone else’s. With each mistake, devastation or loss, there should be a lesson.
Ask yourself, what have you learned in previous jobs, what life skills can you apply to your job search, career or business venture? What lessons or skills can you take with you into the next phase of your career? The lesson of life’s challenges is change. Positive change. Positive change which facilitates progress. Progress in our relationships, with each other (family, friends, neighbors, co-workers, church members, etc.) and most importantly with God, our Lord Jesus Christ.
I have learned that with each trial and tribulation, I come to trust and know that God hears my prayers, He is fighting my battles … both seen and unseen. That HE alone has all the answers. I’ve learned that life will test my faith, sometimes daily. Other times, life quietly lulls me into a false sense of security. Then, just when I start to think I have finally gotten things under control …”WHAM“… life gives me another dose of reality: I AM NOT IN CONTROL!
As I stated , here in my “About Me” page … I know that this life is not my own, I understand that I am not in control. Not by any means. Things I thought I’d do, have yet to be accomplished – words I thought I’d never say, I have indeed spoken – Dreams I thought I’d realize by now are still only a dream – other things I never dreamed I’d do! – the love I thought I’d only experience if I had my own children, I actually have in abundance in my nephews, nieces, and great-niece! Did I fail to mention the additional blessings of my Godson, and two (of his cousins) guys I used to babysit! Whom I love like my own as well – they now allow me baby sit their children too! (Awesome, I love it!) Now that’s God for you! Only He gives us unconditional love, (amazing love!)
I say this to make a point, the main point, which is: God is in control. We cannot change that. He wants us to trust Him and know that ‘He is God. He is our refuge and our strength.” Psalms 46:10
Once we surrender our lives to Him; then, we can have peace about making decisions about those things in our lives that we can actually change! God gave us free will to allow us to make decisions, to allow us to change. The Lord our God, wants us to make positive changes in our lives, to move closer to Him… To submit our own will, with each passing day. So that we might seek His will in all that we do, say, and think. It’s a tall order, I know. We are each faced with the challenges to make positive changes in our lives each and every day. Yes, it’s a struggle. While it is the essence of our human existence, we still have a choice! The war – between our ears, between good and evil, right and wrong, positive or negative – is to choose or not to choose.
Choice. We are not slaves to our environments or surroundings, our friends, our parents, our jobs (present or future), not even our past mistakes. None of these determine where we finish in life. Whether it be a co-worker who made your life miserable on the last job, or your last position, a previous employer who wronged you; stop giving your past a voice. My advise to my nieces and nephews is always: ‘Don’t let your past dictate your future.’ We own the power to choose our path towards a positive future… to change. Positive change results in gain for us. Negative change results in loss, devastation, and separation from God.
Don’t be discouraged during this time of uncertainty. No job lasts forever these days; even fewer will provide retirement for us. Perhaps instead of repeating “wish I’d taken that job“, “maybe I should have started that business“, “I could have gotten a degree“, or “one day, I’ll volunteer“… make up your mind to do something now. Use your lessons to create mobility, you may end up helping someone else along the way.
Matthew 19:26 “All things are possible with God.”
We’ve all made some mistakes – whether it be in our past jobs, in business, career planning, or a lack thereof. But, we all have the free will ~ the power to change our course, and progress beyond the past … to walk with GOD, worship Him, trust Him, submit to Him, praise Him , to give our lives to Him!
